A guy named Joe e-mailed to let me know something interesting. Apparently, in The Essential Calvin and Hobbes the final daily strip (before the Sunday one) is not included in either of the first two books. The strip is from May 23, 1987 and features Calvin making iced tea. This strip is included in the Complete C&H hardcover set.

  • Preface by Lucy Shelton Caswell: The preface to the 2001 exhibition catalogue entitled Calvin and Hobbes Sunday Pages 1985-1995. (Bonus: Here is a photo of the exhibit itself at The Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library from September 10, 2001 to January 15, 2002.)
  • 2001 Introduction: From the exhibition catalogue Calvin and Hobbes Sunday Pages 1985-1995. Here, Bill discusses his time working on the strip and the six years afterwards.

  • Book display photo one and photo two. Many thanks to Chris Pearce for finding these pix which were taken by a fellow named John L. DiBello at BookExpo America in New York City, summer 2005.
  • Here are some photos of the set that I received from James Morton, a gent in the UK who pre-ordered his set and received it early. The first is a look at the paper detailing its contents. The second is a similar top-down view from further back. Then we have a third pic, which shows us what the inside page of book one looks like (note the picture of Calvin fishing, which was the cover of the 1988 calendar). The fourth pic is the splash page from book one. Next up is a fifth photo showing the inside pages of books two and three, followed by the sixth pic with the splash pages from those books.
  • Here is a promotional postcard used to sell the book set.
  • Coverage Ideas: This September 2005 press release details the ways in which newspapers might cover the new book set, from facts about its production to interviews with the editors behind its success.
  • Publishers Weekly review: This review of the set by artist/writer Art Spiegelman comes from an October 2005 edition of the trade journal Publishers Weekly.
  • Entertainment Weekly review: In which writer Scott Brown aptly refers to Calvin and Hobbes as American Zen.
  • 'Complete Calvin and Hobbes' to Likely Sell Out Before Holiday Rush: A very interesting article from The Book Standard (a sister publication to Editor & Publisher) about the lack of Calvin book sets going into the 2005 holiday season.
  • AMP Responds to The Book Standard's 'Calvin and Hobbes' Story: In this rebuttal to the previous article above, Andrews McMeel CEO Thomas Thornton gives his side of the issue, complete with the full requirements of paper and ink used in making the first printing of the 'Complete Calvin' book set.
  • Other notes:
    • This collection is still missing one strip that has never appeared in any of the Calvin and Hobbes books. It appeared in some newspapers on November 28, 1985 and featured Hobbes receiving a bath in the washing machine.
    • Two of the strips in the Complete C&H set have altered dialogue. The first strip is from 07 January 1987:

CALVIN: Mom, was I adopted?

MOM: No, why do you ask?

CALVIN: Are you planning to put me to work in a cannery for 14 hours a day when I turn seven?

MOM: Of course not!

CALVIN: You're not just fattening me up to eat me, are you?

MOM: Good heavens, Calvin! Who put all these ridiculous ideas in your head?!?

CALVIN: That's right. "Ridiculous ideas" she called them.

HOBBES: Oh, sure. You think your mom's going to tell YOU?

In the Complete C&H, the word 'adopted' is changed to 'genetically engineered or cloned.'

  • The second strip with altered dialogue is from 25 November 1988, and originally looked like this:

CALVIN: Watch out, Mom. I'm in a bad mood.

MOM: Be in a bad mood somewhere else, OK? I'm busy.

CALVIN: Hmph! I'll bet my biological mother would've bought me a comic book and made me feel better instead of shunning me like you.

MOM: Kid, anyone but your biological mother would've left you to the wolves long ago.

CALVIN: Yeah right. Really, how much did you pay for me?

In the Complete C&H, the phrase 'my/your biological mother' is changed to 'a good mother,' and Calvin's final bit of dialogue has been altered to: 'Yeah, right. Let's see your training certificate.'
